Why choose bamboo as an alternative to plastic?

Why use bamboo instead of plastic?

Plastic is currently a major cause of mass pollution around the world, and the “throwaway” culture of the 21st century is causing increasing damage to our environment. As countries take steps toward a “greener” future, it’s important to consider some alternatives to plastic that will benefit future generations of us. So just how effective is bamboo as a potential alternative? Let’s take a look!

We often hear about the harmful effects of plastic, but what does this really mean for our planet? For one thing, plastic can take 1,000 years to biodegrade. We are completely surrounded by it – from our mobile phones, to food packaging and cars, plastic is everywhere. Studies have found that only about 9% of the plastic we use is actually recycled or reused… yikes! With 1 million plastic bags being used around the world every minute, we can begin to imagine the global crisis that is increasingly turning our planet into a dumping ground for plastic waste. Not to mention the catastrophic impact this has on our oceans and marine life, with billions of kilograms of plastic being thrown into our oceans every year. At the current rate, it is believed that by 2050, plastic will weigh more than all the fish in the ocean – a dire prediction that highlights the importance of reducing plastic use!

Why use bamboo?

Known as “green gold,” bamboo has a range of positive environmental attributes that make it a healthier alternative to plastic. Not only is it a highly renewable resource, it is also naturally antibacterial and antifungal. It also grows faster than most plants in the world, meaning it can be harvested every few years (unlike hardwoods, which can take up to decades) while also thriving in poor soils ability to restore degraded land. Bamboo also provides 35% more oxygen than the same amount of trees, helping to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere – making it even more environmentally friendly! These amazing plants are also very sturdy and versatile and can be used on everything from scaffolding and furniture to bicycles and soap.
